Are you thinking about traveling down under with the kids?
Not only does Australia brim with natural, culinary and cultural wonders, but it’s also one of the safest countries on the planet. And this makes it the ideal destination for a family vacation.
Now, while Sydney is the ultimate city escape for families and is a no-brainer during your holiday, there are plenty of other exciting things to do and see in the land of plenty!
So, without further ado, here are seven fun things to do in Australia with kids.
Watch The Incredible Penguins Parade on Phillip Island
We couldn’t write an article about fun things to do in Australia with kids without starting with the iconic penguin parade on Phillip Island.
Located about 125 km south of Melbourne, Phillip Island attracts millions of tourists every year for one particular reason; it’s a natural sanctuary for the largest Little penguin colony in the world!
And every night, as the sun sets, thousands of penguins emerge from the ocean and waddle home to their burrows on the beach.
Unforgettable memories for your kids and your family guaranteed!
Explore The Sydney Opera House
Located in Circular Quay, on the foreshore of the stunning Sydney Harbour, the iconic white sails of the Sydney Opera House have become emblematic of the city and even the country.
The Sydney Opera House opened its doors in 1973 after 14 years of construction work.
Today, the majestic building is home to an award-winning restaurant and five theaters and hosts countless operas, concerts, and ballets all year round.
After marveling at the impressive architecture of this iconic monument, we’d recommend booking a guided tour. This way, the whole family can learn more about the construction of one of the most recognizable structures in the world.
Visit The Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary
Located in Brisbane, the Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary is the first and largest koala sanctuary in the world. So, what better way to see the epic animal than by visiting this special place?
The sanctuary was opened in 1927 to protect koalas against rampant culling. Unfortunately, koalas were being hunted for their fur in the early 1900s.
Shortly after it opened its doors, the sanctuary became an attraction among locals and tourists wishing to see the cute animals up close and learn more about them.
And it’s particularly popular with families. So much so that the reserve has implemented a dedicated kids program allowing children and parents to have private up-close encounters with koalas.
Experience The Night safari In Taronga Zoo
If your kids are aged five and over, we’d recommend indulging in the spectacular Roar And Snore Experience provided by the Taronga Zoo in Sydney.
With the Roar and Snore Experience, you’ll be able to sleep at the zoo.
This will allow you to enjoy some of the most beautiful views over the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Opera House at sunset and sunrise.
But most importantly, you’ll experience a unique night safari where passionate local talkers will provide some interesting information about each animal. Whether your kids want to see koalas, kangaroos, or local Little penguins, they’ll find their favorite animals at the zoo.
And as a bonus, you’ll all be able to feed the animals with the zookeepers and fall asleep to the sounds of the zoo!
Snorkel On The Great Barrier Reef
Set in Queensland, a state located in the northeast of the Australian continent, the Great Barrier Reef is a paradise for nature lovers.
The great barrier reef is one of the most beautiful and complex living organisms in the world. And stretching over 2,000 km between Gladstone and Cooktown, it’s the largest coral reef on the planet. Once there, you’ll be able to explore spectacular reefs, atolls, and islands.
And if your kids love snorkeling, they’ll enjoy swimming alongside turtles and colorful fish and even spotting whales from afar!
Cool Off At Cairns Esplanade Lagoon
If you decide to take your family to the Great Barrier Reef, you’ll most likely stay in Cairns.
Cairns is a charming tropical town located in Queensland. It’s also the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and the nearby Daintree Forest, a 130 million years old rainforest.
But Cairns isn’t just a gateway for tourists and adventurers. It offers families plenty of fun activities, including swimming in the popular Esplanade Lagoon. Located in the city center, the lagoon faces the ocean and features a shallow toddler paddling pool and small fountains for kids and adults to cool off in the tropical weather.
Ride A Camel on Cable Beach
Did you know that Australia was home to over one million camels?
Imported from British India during the 19th century, camels were used to help build the railway from Darwin to Adelaide. And Western Australia is where you’ll find most of them! Hence why one of the most popular activities in Broome (a beach resort town located on the edge of the Indian Ocean in Western Australia) is hopping on a camel ride at sunset.
The camel ride takes place every night on the stunning Cable Beach, where the red rocks and white sand offer a stark contrast with the turquoise waters. Taking your children on the Cable Beach camel ride at sunset will make for a fantastic way to end the day for the whole family in this idyllic location.
