The sanctuary was opened in 1927 to protect koalas against rampant culling. Unfortunately, koalas were being hunted for their fur in the early 1900s.

And it’s particularly popular with families. So much so that the reserve has implemented a dedicated kids program allowing children and parents to have private up-close encounters with koalas.
